Kovács Nimród winery

– Eger

You might have heard this one before but it’s a story worth re-telling… Nimród Kovács was born in Budapest in 1949, he escaped communist rule by swimming from modern day Slovenia to Italy in 1971. After a year of being moved from refugee camp to refugee camp he eventually found his way over to the US. The rest of the story follows your quintessential American dream, Hollywood film script kind of tale. Learning enough English to enroll at the University of Colorado allowed Nimród to study various aspects of business management and before long he was marketing director of a major cable TV corporation in the US. Nimrod retired from the corporate world in 2009 for a more sedate life focusing on one of his lifelong passions, wine.

The Kovács winery is located in the chocolate-box town of Eger, nestled in the Carpathian basin with vineyards enjoying a sheltered position and a long, hot growing season. The town is probably best known for producing Bikavér or Bull’s Blood, a tannin rich, hairs on your chest style of red with all the subtlety of a punch to the sternum. The Kovács wines however take pride in bucking that trend, each variety is assessed for potential and blended with great skill to produce wines with elegance and character.
